SELF EMPLOYED CANADIANS SEEKS CLARITY ON EI BENEFITS AMID COVID-19

Canadians affected by COVID-19 and placed in quarantine, can benefit with the following support actions:

  • Those eligible for EI benefits can be paid for the first week of their claim. The one-week long waiting period for EI sickness benefits is being waived off for new claimants who are quarantined due to COVID-19

    Call to know more about waiving the EI sickness benefits waiting period
  • The pre-requisite is that the application for sickness benefits should have been filed, which takes less than an hour to complete and pain free processs.
  • People claiming EI sickness benefits due to quarantine will not have to provide a medical certificate
  • If people cannot complete their claim for EI sickness benefits due to quarantine may apply later and have their EI claim backdated to cover the period of delay

  • Workers who are ineligible for EI and face unemployment will be supported by the Emergency Support Benefit which has been allocated up to $5 billion.


    Those who qualify are eligible to receive 55% of their earnings up to a maximum cap of C$573 a week. The maximum period being 15 weeks.

    Apart from being specific for each individual cases, applicants would normally be required to prove their medical status by way of a medical certificate backed by records of employment, however, though as per the new rules quarantined workers can apply without providing a medical certificate.

    INELIGIBLE SELF EMPLOYED – HOW DO THEY QUALIFY?

    There are still situations for those who themselves are not quarantined but are taking care of those who are in quarantine, parents etc. So, they may not qualify from the EI benefits rules stand point, however, they can also qualify and can apply for EI benefits.

    Although details of the amount, nor the length of time for which this support will be available is not yet disclosed by the government, but up to $5 billion has been earmarked for supporting workers who are ineligible for EI and now face loss of wages due to corona virus.

  • Usually, those who are eligible under regular rules have to prove that the loss of wage has decreased by more than 40% for at least one week.
  • During the past 52 weeks, they should have accumulated 600 insured hours of work, before the start of your claim or since the start of your last claim, whichever is shorter
  • According to the EI sickness benefits webpage If an self employed person registered for EI special benefits then normally there is a waiting period of 12 months from the date of confirmed registration, before they may be eligible for sickness benefits. They must also meet all of the following conditions:

  • The amount of time spent on running the business has decreased by more than 40% for at least one week because of medical condition
  • The applicant earned a minimum amount of self-employed earnings during the calendar year before the year they applied for benefits. In order to receive benefits in year 2020, the applicant must have earned at least $7,279 in 2019
