Prime Minister Justin Trudeau doubled down on forcing people off the streets. This action or rather lack of action might unravel all the gains that Canada has made under his leadership to contain COVID-19. When Canadian's compare the leadership in display south of border they give a sigh of relief that in Canada they have Justin Trudeau, who is coming across as more reasonable and thoughtful in this time of crises
Yet, at this stage when Canada is experiencing a dangerous daily upsurge in cases being reported of people being infected across the country, this is no time to leave things to chances.
This translates into leaving upto the Provinces to implement emergency measures, which clearly is not working enough. Or trusting the general sense of people to stay off the street, which too is not working, since many across the country are going on with their life as if they are beyond the clutches of virus and are putting the most vulnerable in the communities at risk.
AN ENEMY MOST LETHAL
COVID-19 carries with it the most lethal element of it being an unknown, invisible enemy. Researchers across the world are working around the clock to try to unlock the mystery to understand the scope and extent of this mutating virus. What it does to our body is now known, but that empty golden syringe still awaits the precious vaccine, and may waits for months to percolate down to village and town level across the world, if the vaccine is developed within weeks. By that time, unfortunately, many might loose there precious all including their life.
For an enemy as nimble, lethal, widespread and mysterious as Corona Virus, we do not have the luxury of following standard protocol
This mandates that government at the federal level should step in to take wipe off that one percent doubt in people who are in two minds about driving down the street for non-essential outing. Some, fearing bad managers, still go to work, others, just for no reason at all. This is the sad reality, the lure of business continuity is making some managers turn a blind eye to the calamaties facing their employees, It is for these kind of peope that we need the federal government invoke the Federal Emergency Act, who will not listen to reason.
At this stage nothing should be left to chance. When Trudeau considers as the last resort, he runs the risk of letting it slide into it being the only resort, but by then all other sane options would have been exhausted and with its back against the wall, which eventually will harm Canada even more.
TIME FOR FEDERAL EMERGENCIES ACT
In times of crisis, such as war, flooding and other calamities, where there is a precedencee and a documented record of Canada dealing with that kind of threat, the federal Emergencies Act should undoubtedly be invoked as the last resort, only when all other steps would have been exhausted. However, for an enemy that is as nimble, lethal, widespread and mysterious as Corona Virus, we do not have the luxury of following standard protocol. This deadly situation calls for an action at the highest level that is unprecedented. The decision in this case should be top down, rather than bottom up.
